ISSEY MIYAKE Fall 1989 Vintage Pleated Top w/ Hood & Maxi Skirt Suit
Versions of this extraordinary and extremely rare Issey Miyake hooded suit from autumn 1989 were not only seen on the catwalk ( runway photos by Paul van Riel are available via Europeana fashion) and in the 1989 Fiat Uno international advertisement, but were also photographed by Irving Penn and Yuriko Takagi and worn by the inimitable Grace Jones.
The suit is made from the signature finely pleated poly fabric in anthracite metallic and consists of a maxi skirt and long-sleeved top with the iconic oversized hood that can be worn up or pulled down. The expertly crafted pleats allow for a variety of shapes when the suit is worn. Both pieces slip on; the skirt has an elasticated waistband. 100% polyester, unlined. Made in Japan.
Undoubtedly one of Issey Miyake's most iconic creations and very rare - we've never seen a hooded version on the market. Two similar ensembles without hoods from Miyake's 1989 autumn collection are held by the Costume Institute of New York's Metropolitan Museum. Important Issey Miyake pieces reliably fetch five-figure prices at auction.
