ISSEY MIYAKE F/W 1989/90 Vintage Pleated Suit w/ Large Hood Size M
Versions of this excpetional and extremely rare Issey Miyake hooded suit from F/W 1989/90 not only made appearances on the catwalk (runway pictures above by Paul van Riel via Europeana fashion) and in the international Fiat Uno commercial from 1989 but were also photographed by Irving Penn (left 1) and Yuriko Takagi (left 3, picture via Taschen's Issey Miyake book) AND worn by the inimitable Grace Jones (left 2, via Pinterest).
The suit is made of the typical finely pleated poly fabric in metallic charcoal and comprises a maxi skirt and a long-sleeve top with the iconic superlarge hood that can be worn up or down. The expertly crafted horizontal pleats allow to create a variety of shapes when the suit is worn, e.g. with the top inside or outside of the skirt - please see the pictures to get an idea. Both pieces slip on to wear; the skirt has an elasticated waistband. 100% polyester, unlined. Made in Japan.
Without doubt one of Issey Miyake's most iconic creations and super rare - we have never seen a hooded version of these suits on the market. Two similar ensembles without hood from Miyake's F/W 1989/90 collection are held by the New York Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute. Important Issey Miyake pieces reliably fetch five-figure prices at auction.
Both pieces tagged size "M" - fit accordingly and equate to a D 38, F 40, I 44, US 8, UK 12, MEDIUM, could also work for one size down - D 36, F 38, I 42, US 6, UK 10, SMALL
